Abstract: An analytical model for the chatter frequency of a turning cutter considering system compliance and flank wear of the tool is presented in this research. The fundamental mechanism of selfexcited vibration at the presence of tool wearland is examined, and a mathematical model is developed to describe the frequency characteristics of the vibration. In the paper a comparison of the chatter frequencies for a fresh cutting tool and a worn cutting tool is provided to demonstrate the coupling between wearland and chatter. The theoretical model of chatter frequency is validated by experimental observations over a range of turning conditions.
