description abstractThe hydrodynamic stability of a liquid column resting on a gas in a vertical tube with its upper end closed is analyzed. The maximum height above which the interface is unstable is given as a function of the Bond number and the density ratio. The instability is shown to be monotonic, i.e., nonoscillatory.
