Analysis of a Laminate Disk Rotating Near a Flat Plate

Abstract: A laminate disk which is rotated at high speed in close proximity to a rigid flat plate is analyzed in this paper. A thin gas film separates the disk from the rigid plate when the disk is rotating. Since the disk is composed of different materials, when it is rotated at high speeds, differences in stresses occur between the layers which produce an internal moment in the disk. This moment causes a flat static disk to deflect. The governing equations for this system are presented and solved. An approach is presented which can be used to quickly approximate the magnitude of the laminate structure effects in such a system.
