description abstractNonlinear Ritz analysis is used to investigate the elastic buckling behavior of pressure loaded cylinders. Careful analysis of the energy changes during the buckling process allows definition of a reduced stiffness theoretical model. This reduced stiffness model provides a convenient means for estimating lower bounds to the imperfection sensitive elastic buckling behavior.
