description abstractIt is proposed that the classical Maxwell criterion for instability of gradient systems has significance as a lower bound on the appearance of localized as opposed to repeated periodic buckling. The hypothesis is tested against experiments, for the classic nonlinear problem of diamond-pattern buckling in the long thin axially loaded cylindrical shell. Excellent correlation is achieved.
