description abstractPropagation of Rayleigh waves in a perfectly conducting elastic half-space in the presence of magnetic fields is considered for a possible application in nondestructive measurements of mechanical and/or electromagnetic parameters in electromagnetic materials. In particular, the dependence of Rayleigh wave velocity on magnetic and elastic parameters of the conducting medium in tangentially and normally oriented primary magnetic fields is investigated. Numerical results for three elastic materials with different elastic parameters are presented for a range of magnetic permeability. It is shown that the effect of magnetic fields render the medium essentially anisotropic and that the magnetic permeability of the medium and the orientation of the primary magnetic field strongly affect the Rayleigh wave velocity field.
