Abstract: This article concerns the problem of determining shapes of minimum stress concentration. Special emphasis is placed upon the mathematically precise formulation of these problems and upon the study of cases in which the optimum shape can be found in a highly explicit form. For all the cases discussed, a mathematical proof of the optimality is given.
