Abstract: The existence of different linkages which generate identical coupler-curves is investigated. For a certain class of mechanisms, the skew pantograph is shown to be the basis for obtaining cognates. An analytical approach, applicable to linkages which generate algebraic curves, is discussed and applied to geared five-bars with gear ratio +1, +1/2, −1.
