Structure of Mixing Layers and Jets

Abstract: This article is intended as a brief review of the substantial progress that has been made in recent years regarding our understanding of the structure of incompressible mixing layers and jets. The work has been aimed at the graduate student who possesses a familiarity with the general areas of laminar-turbulent transition and turbulence, but is not familiar with the specific research areas involving mixing layer and jet flows. The article should be of assistance both in assimilating the vast body of literature that exists in this field as well as in deciding what avenues present fertile grounds for investigation. Since a number of the topics described are relatively new, it is believed that the article will also be of interest to the specialist. The review should not be considered exhaustive but rather should serve to guide the interested reader to more detailed works.
