Abstract: The hydrodynamic characteristics of a cylinder-plane bearing in normal motion is investigated by using the Reynolds equation in conjunction with the Coyne-Elrod rupture model. It is seen that the solutions of the pressure distribution as well as the rupture point are more acceptable than those found using the Reynolds boundary conditions. It is found that the squeeze effect cancels the entraining effect as the approach velocity is large. The entraining effect becomes important as the velocity of the normal approach is reduced, and a significant negative pressure region occurs in the downstream divergent space.
