description abstractTwo nonlinear problems relating to buckling and parametric excitation of thin elastic cylindrical shells are considered. In the first, time-dependent end displacements are specified and, in the second, time-dependent end loads are specified. The effects of large deflections, initial imperfections, inertia forces, viscous damping, and the elasticity of a testing machine are taken into account. New results from this nonlinear formulation show, for the first problem, favorable agreement with the experimental results of L. R. Ispravnikov, and clear deviations from the linear-theory predictions for the second problem.
