Abstract: Steady flow of an inviscid, stratified fluid into a line sink is analyzed numerically using a finite difference scheme. A criterion is proposed to determine the critical Froude number below which selective withdrawal is possible for arbitrary sink position and upstream density profile. For the case of selective withdrawal, a method to determine the withdrawal layer thickness is developed.
