Abstract: A method for designing dynamic vibration absorbers which create antiresonances at specified points on a sinusoidally forced vibratory system is described. Spring-mass absorber systems are treated in detail. Among all possible solutions, a unique minimum mass solution is shown to exist if the relative displacement of the absorber mass is constrained. The sensitivity of the design to variations in frequency, spring constant, and absorber mass is discussed. The procedure is illustrated by numerical results for a simply supported uniform beam.
