A Theory for the Three-Dimensional Mating of Chamfered Cylindrical Parts

Abstract: Assembly of real parts is usually a spatial phenomenon. Automated equipment which may perform the mating will often have inaccuracy much larger than the clearance of the parts to be assembled. To overcome that difficulty as well as prescribe the insertion force behavior, engineered compliance devices are being created. This paper desribes the requirements for the most complex assembly apparatus thus far attempted at CSDL; it also defines desirable characteristics for the chamfers on the mating parts.
