description abstractThe present paper describes a novel calculation procedure for the detailed prediction of flow field during the process of metal extrusion. The flow of metal has been regarded as a flow of highly viscous Newtonian fluid. A finite-difference algorithm commonly used for solving hydrodynamics has been adapted to develop an improved prediction procedure. The predicted flow field compares well with the available experiments. A new dimensionless parameter which has been shown to represent the metal forming process has been identified; its relationship with extrusion ratio has also been demonstrated.
