description abstractAn externally pressurized bearing having variable external flow restrictors has been investigated and compared to a conventional externally pressurized journal bearing having fixed external restrictors. The variable restrictor considered was adjusted by means of a journal load sensing device and its resistance to flow varied linearly with load. Use of this variable resistance was found to greatly increase the bearing stiffness compared to that for a bearing equipped with conventional fixed external restrictors. For the bearing geometry and supply pressure employed, a bearing stiffness of at least 50 × 105 lb/in. was achieved. A design procedure that provides a given stiffness is presented.
