description abstractInfluences of following factors upon the severity of asperity contacts and the life-to-pitting were investigated using rolling/sliding contact of two rollers; (1) the nature of drive, i.e., drive ratio of 1:1, one of 29:28 and friction drive, (2) characteristics of surface topography, (3) slide/sweep ratio. As results, combined effects of these factors were found and the conclusive remarks were consistent with the results of gear tests which were carried out using gear ratios 1:1 and 27:25. The authors discuss the mechanism of pitting from the point of view of the asperity interaction.
