description abstractTool-life curves have been obtained for an experimental, high-strength Zr 8.6 wt% Al alloy, in two metallurgical states (two-phase Zr2 Al/Zr and single phase Zr3 Al). Below a critical cutting speed, the data obey the Taylor expression V τn = C, where V is the cutting speed, τ is tool-life and n and C are constants. This expression is used to determine the cutting conditions which optimize the rate of metal removal during turning operations.
