description abstractThe interface pressure distribution of a single bolt-flange assembly was measured for the various surface topographies and the materials of the joint surfaces and also thicknesses of the upper flange by means of ultrasonic waves. The results show that the surface topography, the joint material, and the flange thickness have noticeable influences not only on the form of the interface pressure distribution curve but also upon the effective area of the connecting force. The measured interface pressure distribution and the effective area of the connecting force differ significantly from the analytical values so far presented from the results of theoretical studies using equivalent models with perfect joint surfaces or without joint surfaces.
