description abstractThis paper describes a cavity forging die set fitted with thermocouples for measuring both surface and sub-surface temperatures. Measurements at the surfaces show how the temperature transients are influenced basically by flow of forging stock. Maximum values of surface temperatures are shown to vary over the surface of the cavity and are affected by the type of machine used. Sub-surface temperatures are found to be primarily dependent on the length of time the forging stock is in intimate contact with the die and relatively insensitive to the type of forging machine used.
