description abstractFinite element analysis of stub cantilever plate with varying thickness considering transverse shear deformation and elastic deformation of built-in edge is presented and applied to strength of spur gear teeth. Bending moment at built-in edge and deflection of both uniform plates and gear teeth are calculated and illustrated. The results show close agreement with experimental ones. It is examined that well-known Wellauer’s moment image method gives good approximation of moment at the root except in case of corner point loading. Further application of the analysis is developed to longitudinal load distribution on the contact line on spur gear teeth caused by misalignment error showing good agreement with experimental results by Niemann and Reister. The present method can be applied to strength of helical gear teeth.
