description abstract | This paper connects a very useful theory in the area of optimal arches with a presentation of an outlined and demonstrated procedure for use by the design engineer. The eigenvalue problem presented in the work of Budiansky, Frauenthal, and Hutchinson [1] is first verified and extended. The theory, which considers buckling as the criteria for failure, is then applied to categories of cross sections. A complete design example is included to illustrate the procedure. | |
