description abstractA momentum exchange model is developed to describe the dynamic performance of mechanisms with clearance. A following mode is incorporated in the model to account for the case when contact is maintained between the pin and the socket while they move relative to each other. The regions of occurrence of the three modes for a crank-slider mechanism are discussed. This study is a first step in correlating noise-to-impact spectra for preventive maintenance.
