description abstractA shuttle loom runs irregularly, noisily, and sometimes inefficiently due, in part, to the nature of the conventional picking mechanism. The fact has been demonstrated by measuring the instantaneous speed and power values over a number of loom cycles. The probable reasons for the behavior are discussed from a theoretical viewpoint and some supporting data are presented to show that the simple classical theories do not hold good under actual dynamic conditions.
