description abstractThe principle of minimum potential energy is used to derive the elastic characteristics for a particular type flapper valve (Fig. 1a). The results show that to obtain adequate predictions of the deflections and stresses of the valve for all but the first increment of loading the nonlinear aspects, caused by change in configuration, must be considered. This analysis includes the nonlinear effects in the range of interest for many flapper valves.
