| description abstract | The deformation response of a simple cord composite to an axial load and twisting moment was found analytically. The simple cord composite consists of a metallic cord surrounded by a concentric circular cylindrical matrix that is bonded to the cord. In general, cords have extension‐twist coupling. The cord will tend to unwind when the composite is axially loaded. However, the torsional rigidity of the matrix will tend to resist the unwinding of the cord. The extension‐twist coupling of the cord and the interaction between the cord and the matrix due to shear stresses at the bonded surfaces were considered. The composite axial force and twisting moment were found in terms of the axial strain and twist per unit length. Similar to the cord, simple cord composites were found to have extension‐twist coupling. The application of the solution to noncircular cylindrical matrices was considered. A numerical example was used to illustrate the deformation response of simple cord composites to an axial load and twisting moment. | |
