Abstract: A new model is presented for the effect of length on the fatigue life of long thin continuous components. The model assumes that flaws of variable strength are distributed along the length, which relates the fatigue life to the manufacturing process that produces the component. The life distribution produced by the model differs from the usual Weibull‐type distribution for the effect of length in that saturation of size effect can occur, as has been observed.
