Abstract: Dynamic contact problems are frequently analyzed by using interface finite elements (penalty elements) and explicit time integration. A major difficulty with such procedures is the selection of a time increment that provides stable computation and is no more conservative than is necessary. This paper demonstrates a simple procedure for obtaining such a time step and proves its conservativeness for small displacement nonlinear response.
