    Abstract: The role of gravity in the consolidation of a relatively soft soil layer of large thickness is assessed analytically. Under the assumption of small deformation, Terzaghi's equation is modified and solved for a surface loading. Linearized Biot equations of poro‐elasticity are used and solved by Laplace transform. Numerical results are given and examined.
