description abstract | On the basis of substantive investigations and data collection which includes the data of highway alignment, traffic volume and accidents, the quantitative impact of the accesses on safety performance of two-lane highways were analyzed. The methodologies such as single factor and multi-factors were used. It is found that the access has significant influence on accident rates, especially on rear-end accident rate. The quantitative results were obtained as well. The number of total accidents, fatal and injury accidents, roadside accidents, rear-end accidents, and collision accidents all increased with the increase of access density. On two-lane highways in mountainous terrain, the total accidents increased by 4.36% and rear-end accidents increased by 11.9% with one unit increase of the access density. | |
