Abstract: Acoustic emission (AE) is an important physical phenomenon where rocks are deformed and fractured because of loading. It is also a direct constitutive parameter that demonstrates the mechanical property of rocks. Experiments on large-scale rock failure were performed in tri-axial stress state, and the mechanical properties of rocks and AE characteristics of the rocks were obtained. A rapid multi-channel AE data acquisition system was used to monitor the spatio-temporal distribution of damages before fracture. Based on the experimental results, the deformation failure and energy properties of granite, sandstone, and marble were examined. A mathematical expression between the AE of the released accumulated energy and the load was derived. The experimental results verified several precursors, such as accelerating energy release, of the macro-fracture of the samples.
