Abstract: This paper presents the observed bridges performance, including damage attributed to storm surge, wind, impact by debris and barges, and scour from Hurricane Katrina, and study of wave forces on bridge decks, including a recommended simple estimation method and countermeasures used to restore functionality to the bridges and transportation system. The lessons learned and research studies of the storm surges and mitigation measures performed directly by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and state DOTs through the National Cooperative Highway Research Program are also briefly introduced.
