| description abstract | A discussion is presented on the automation of civil engineering functions. This paper focuses on five basic problems: (1) Definition of the goals of automation; (2) selection of automation tasks; (3) evaluation and purchase of appropriate hardware and software; (4) computer education and literacy; and (5) maintenance and updating of hardware and software. Automation is defined as the use of computers to increase the rate at which a task is performed and decrease the amount of direct human time and attention necessary to perform the task. In addition, the successful automation of a complex engineering function is presented. It is concluded that automation both brings computer technology into the field of civil engineering and provides increases in cost effectiveness. | |
