Abstract: The management challenges of integrating construction methods, such as preassembly and modularization, with design approaches are described. Effective integration of these methods brings about many project benefits. First we describe how construction methods relate to the other major considerations in defining a project. We then identify benefits of integration that relate to the project's environment and benefits that assist in meeting the project's objectives. The project changes and the management challenges of integrating consideration of major methods and fundamental design approaches for both the overall project and specific functional operations are also described. The practical applications describe managerial actions to realize the benefits, and the conclusions indicate the broader implications of integrating construction methods and design approach.
