Abstract: There has been considerable discussion in recent years concerning the relative quality of the student entering civil engineering as compared to those entering other majors. A study funded in part by ASCE was undertaken to obtain data on this subject. Responses from 127 schools were received with information being combined into three major groups, ACT, SAT, and quality point average to transfer from general engineering to a selected major. Civil engineering students were compared with mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering students. The results were overwhelming that in every measure the civil engineering students were the lowest of all four compared.
