Abstract: The writer presents a number of selected recommendations for career development of professional engineers interested in pursuing a leadership role in technical management. Initial qualifications and preparation form a sound technical foundation. Consistent attention, upgrading, and strengthening of contemporary skills lead to management interest and investment. The direction toward management success becomes initially established. Attention then shifts toward the development of managerial skills which requires new commitment and development. Maintaining high performance levels through self‐motivation and individual development requires additional attention to delegation, investment in colleagues, communications and effective decision‐making. Pitfalls in straying off course are presented. The writer presents certain personal recommendations which through experience have formed a basis for success in technical management of professionals.
