Abstract: Biofilters treat contaminated air by passing it through a damp porous medium that supports a vigorous culture of microorganisms. Contaminants dissolve in the water and are degraded by the microorganisms. Successful operation of a biofilter requires knowledge of the air and contaminant loading, medium characteristics, water content, temperature, bed permeability, and biological activity. Many techniques have been used to monitor these parameters in the lab and in the field. Possibilities for new techniques can be described. Selection of an appropriate set of monitoring techniques will provide the information needed for effective operation while minimizing cost.
