Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to show the current limits on Chinese construction-management practice. In an era of increased global competitiveness, which extends to the construction industry, China is fighting an uphill, technological battle despite long-term economic growth and major increases in annual construction project values. A survey of Chinese constructors revealed the limits on current construction project management techniques while literature and personal contacts have demonstrated a rapidly growing Western commercial response designed to bring Western tools to China. A study of the responses to the Chinese survey and a comparison of the practices of Chinese and U.S. construction managers resulted in recommendations about project management both for Western computer hardware and construction management software companies and to constructors pursuing business in China.
