Abstract: A brief overview of Japan's building design and construction industry is provided, and the technologies commonly used by it are outlined. The influence on the construction industry exerted by the largest and most influential design and construction firms in Japan is described. The striking technological capabilities of these “comprehensive constructors” are outlined, including their building design and construction methods, and research and development efforts. Specific examples of design, construction, manufacture, and maintenance technologies are described in detail. The relationship between the Japanese construction industry's overall organization and the technological methods it develops and employs is discussed. Relationships between corporate organization and technological strategies are also outlined. The use of technology in the Japanese and American construction industries is compared in terms of industry organization, corporate structure, design and construction techniques, and research methods. The competitiveness of U.S. industry relative to Japan in the global marketplace is briefly discussed.
