description abstract | A description of metal matrix composites is presented which includes fiber materials, matrix materials, fiber‐matrix combinations, and fabrication methods. Over the past 25 years there has been an interest in metal matrix composites because of their excellent structural properties. Yet this material has been used in only a few aerospace applications. The introduction of inexpensive fibers and fabrication techniques has motivated its use. The application of this material has now been directed towards structures requiring lightweight characteristics. This is a major consideration in three‐dimensional truss construction and the material has been applied toward this form of structure. In addition, commercial application has been directed toward the use of metal matrix composites in the automotive (e.g., within engine construction) and recreation industries. | |
