    Interdependent Recovery Methodology for Residential Buildings and Household Housing in Community Resilience Modeling

    Abstract: The growing field of multidisciplinary community resilience assessment requires analysts to model complex interactions across physical infrastructure and social systems to support planning and inform decisions. Community resilience models that fuse disciplines examine the hazard-induced damage to physical infrastructure and then propagate the effects to quantify long-term economic losses and changes in population stability. However, most community recovery models to this point were designed to examine the recovery of a single system or rely on a host of assumptions due to data limitations. In this study, a methodology is proposed and illustrated to examine interdependent residential recovery, specifically modeling dislocated households and the damaged residential buildings needing repair. The methodology integrates the building damage approach, household allocation, population dislocation, and residential building recovery with an existing household housing recovery approach developed in previous studies. The methodology is demonstrated for the city of Joplin, Missouri, impacted by the 2011 Joplin tornado. Quantifying interdependent community recovery across physical and social systems can help communities plan more realistically for their recovery and maintain population stability following natural hazard events.
