description abstract | Results of an analysis of engineering‐construction computerization cost‐effectiveness are presented in this paper. Benefits of such automation are discussed first. They are most easily measured by home‐office hour savings. Costs are then identified to assess the overall cost‐effectiveness of computerization. Since quantification of some automation costs and benefits is difficult, a qualitative analysis performed after a series of site interviews and a workshop is used to draw conclusions. Some success stories obtained during these interviews are reported. Downstream benefits of computerized home‐office functions and their importance are identified. We conclude by presenting a framework for evaluating the cost‐effectiveness of computerization. | |
