Abstract: Design errors are one of the major risk factors causing rework and delay. Therefore, accurate cost analysis of potential economic losses attributable to design errors is crucial from a practical point of view. This paper proposes a basis for establishing building information modeling (BIM) investment strategies by quantifying the various costs associated with design errors for error prevention. The design errors were classified into three basic types: simple design (Type 1); rework-related (Type 2) that may lead to demolition and rework; and delay-related (Type 3) likely to prolong the construction period. To evaluate the effects of BIM application quantitatively, the performance potential of BIM-assisted identification of individual design errors was examined. A comparison of the influences of classified design errors on the project revealed that the total cost of the design errors leading to schedule delay was 194.69% higher than that of the simple design errors and the direct design error costs due to errors leading to demolition and rework.
