Abstract: A vertical motion sensor based upon radiosonde instrumentation is developed for use in measuring disturbances with vertical velocities typically exceeding about 10 cm s?1. The sensor is carried aloft by balloon and released at any desired altitude, whereupon a parachute controls the fallspeed relative to the airflow. A description of the system, its use, and examples of measurements in winter orographic flow are given.
