description abstractVerification error covariance statistics for operational 12-hr prognoses of 300-mb heights and winds have been obtained. Based on these statistical data, optimal weightings on height and wind observations at a typical distribution of upper air observing stations have been derived and the indicated error of the resulting objective analysis calculated. For comparison, the weightings implied by the conventional (NMC) analysis scheme were determined and evaluated by means of the same statistics.
