Abstract: The Paradise Airline crash of 1 March 1964 occurred under conditions reconstructed, according to observational and theoretical evidence, that included a strong mountain lee wave with fully developed foehn and hydraulic jump. For a pilot attempting to ascend from an upwind valley and clear the lee crest, these conditions are extremely hazardous.
