Abstract: Pinkel and Smith have recently suggested the use of repeat-sequence coded pulses to increase the time-bandwidth product for single-ping incoherent Doppler velocity measurements with sidescan sonars. Comparisons between existing theories, numerical simulations, and real ocean data confirm that a significant reduction in Doppler velocity variance is provided by coding.
