    Formation of Crystallographic Etch Pits on Ice, and Its Application to the Study of Hailstones

    Source: Journal of Applied Meteorology:;1966:;volume( 005 ):;issue: 005::page 710
    Author:
    Knight, Charles A.
    DOI: 10.1175/1520-0450(1966)005<0710:FOCEPO>2.0.CO;2
    Publisher: American Meteorological Society
    Abstract: The principle of formation of etch pits with crystal faces on ice crystals is explained as a natural consequence of evaporation (or any sort of dissolution) at concave surfaces of crystals. A new technique of ice etching using perforated metal foil is described. It is a useful way of determining grain orientations in hail stones.
