Abstract: An energy balance is formulated for the crop layer which is influenced by the practice of heating. With steady state assumed, this energy balance equation is solved to indicate the required heat input to maintain the crop layer at a safe temperature. Nomographs are presented which permit rapid solution of the equations for a wide variety of conditions. Comparisons with limited field data indicate that this method is accurate within about five per cent.
