Abstract: Twenty-one vortex cloud patterns from TIROS I wide angle photographs were related to the pertinent features of the corresponding synoptic analyses. A five-stage model depicting the evolution of a cyclonic vortex pattern from the initial frontal wave to the final stage of the decaying cyclone is presented with appropriate examples from the TIROS pictures.
